She spent much of her later life confined to bed after a <strong data-start=\"479\" data-end=\"508\">stroke caused by diabetes<\/strong>. My father and six uncles also lived with this condition, and I witnessed firsthand the devastating impact it had on their health.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"643\" data-end=\"926\">Some developed <strong data-start=\"658\" data-end=\"675\">heart disease<\/strong>, others struggled with <strong data-start=\"699\" data-end=\"715\">nerve damage<\/strong> or <strong data-start=\"719\" data-end=\"738\">vision problems<\/strong>. One of my uncles lost his leg to amputation, while another gradually lost his sight. My father and two of my uncles passed away from complications of heart disease related to diabetes.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"928\" data-end=\"1152\">Each family member carried a unique burden of this disease, and as I watched them suffer, I was left with a burning question: <em data-start=\"1054\" data-end=\"1150\">Why does diabetes cause so many complications, and is there a way to stop this from happening?<\/em><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1154\" data-end=\"1259\">These early experiences were not just painful memories; they became the driving force behind my career.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"1261\" data-end=\"1264\" \/>\n<h3 data-start=\"1266\" data-end=\"1292\">A Path Into Research<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-798 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/nailarabbani.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Paul-Thornalley.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"198\" height=\"225\" \/><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1294\" data-end=\"1537\">Driven by this personal mission, I pursued my PhD under the guidance of <strong data-start=\"1366\" data-end=\"1425\">Professor Paul J. Thornalley at the University of Essex<\/strong>. It was there that I began to unravel the hidden biochemical processes behind diabetes and its complications.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1539\" data-end=\"1726\">My doctoral research focused on developing technologies to measure the subtle forms of damage that occur in the body during metabolic disorders. Specifically, I studied three processes:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1728\" data-end=\"1899\">\n<li data-start=\"1728\" data-end=\"1779\">\n<p data-start=\"1730\" data-end=\"1779\"><strong data-start=\"1730\" data-end=\"1743\">Oxidation<\/strong> \u2013 damage caused by free radicals.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1780\" data-end=\"1840\">\n<p data-start=\"1782\" data-end=\"1840\"><strong data-start=\"1782\" data-end=\"1795\">Glycation<\/strong> \u2013 harmful sugar modifications to proteins.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1841\" data-end=\"1899\">\n<p data-start=\"1843\" data-end=\"1899\"><strong data-start=\"1843\" data-end=\"1856\">Nitration<\/strong> \u2013 damage from reactive nitrogen species.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"1901\" data-end=\"2078\">To capture these microscopic changes, I pioneered a technology called <strong data-start=\"1971\" data-end=\"1983\">AGEomics<\/strong>, using <strong data-start=\"1991\" data-end=\"2012\">mass spectrometry<\/strong>, one of the most powerful analytical methods in modern science.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"2080\" data-end=\"2083\" \/>\n<h3 data-start=\"2085\" data-end=\"2134\">AGEomics: Opening a New Window Into Disease<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-185 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/nailarabbani.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/cropped-naila-logo-1-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"116\" height=\"116\" \/><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"2136\" data-end=\"2454\">AGEomics technology provided a new lens through which we could understand how diseases like diabetes progress at the molecular level. By detecting markers of glycation, oxidation, and nitration, we could trace how sugar metabolism goes wrong and why it leads to complications in the heart, nerves, eyes, and kidneys.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2456\" data-end=\"2782\">Although diabetes remained my primary focus, AGEomics also opened doors to studying other major conditions, including <strong data-start=\"2574\" data-end=\"2635\">arthritis, autism, liver disease, and Alzheimer\u2019s disease<\/strong>. The unifying theme across all of these was <strong data-start=\"2680\" data-end=\"2722\">biochemical stress and cellular damage<\/strong>\u2014and the urgent need to find ways to prevent or repair it.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"2784\" data-end=\"2787\" \/>\n<h3 data-start=\"2789\" data-end=\"2820\">Why I Focused on Diabetes<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-786 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/nailarabbani.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/The-Glyoxylase-System-300x225.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"205\" height=\"154\" \/><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"2822\" data-end=\"3021\">Among all these conditions, diabetes was personal. I had seen its toll not in textbooks, but in my own family. With AGEomics, I wanted to go beyond measuring damage: I wanted to <strong data-start=\"3000\" data-end=\"3018\">find solutions<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3023\" data-end=\"3328\">This quest led me to explore how the body\u2019s natural defense systems\u2014particularly enzymes like <strong data-start=\"3117\" data-end=\"3140\">Glyoxalase 1 (Glo1)<\/strong>\u2014could be supported to detoxify harmful byproducts of glucose metabolism. It is a mission born from family history, shaped by scientific discovery, and sustained by the belief that <strong data-start=\"3525\" data-end=\"3587\">we can find better ways to prevent and manage this disease<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3592\" data-end=\"3839\">Through innovations like AGEomics and natural interventions such as <strong data-start=\"3660\" data-end=\"3677\">GlucoRegulate<\/strong>, we are making meaningful progress.
